B&M Family Farm, LLC is rooted in memory and driven by purpose. Located in Maple Hill, NC, our family farm spans nearly 90 acres—it is a sacred inheritance. Decades ago, Byron French James, a devoted farmer, tended this soil. Upon his passing, the land was entrusted to his eight surviving daughters. For years, it lay still.
Now, the second and third generations of Byron and Mary James's descendants are restoring this land to its rightful purpose as a place of nourishment, strength, and possibility. Together, we are picking up the tools of our ancestors and cultivating a future rooted in care and continuity, while also emphasizing the importance of agricultural education. Yet, our roots go even deeper.
Just four miles away stands Sycamore Springs Plantation, also known as the Old James Plantation, where our ancestors once lived, worked, and led. We honor names like Charlotte James, George James, and Polly Swinson James, remembering a lineage shaped by hardship and grace. In family stories, Charlotte's sister, Nursey, is celebrated as a woman of fierce resolve—managing plantation operations, standing firm through the Civil War, and guiding others toward freedom and beyond until she passed in the 1940s. This farm is our way of honoring that legacy.
We are restoring what was left to us and building what comes next. This is where the past meets the future, and memory meets movement as we harvest a legacy at B&M Family Farm in NC.
